The problem of external exposure is given by 90% by the metastable technetium 99 and the main source of exposure is radiation from patients injected for diagnostic procedures. To determine the values of exposure rate at one meter away from the patient at the end of his study of bone scintigraphy with 99mTc. Design: An observational, descriptive, transversal study. Location: Department of Nuclear Medicine of the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN). Method: We studied 300 nuclear medicine patients that met the inclusion criteria; and using a data collection sheet information exposure rate of patients at the end of the scan was obtained. Results: Of the 300 patients, 224 were women and 76 men, representing 75% and 25% respetivamente. The average age of the patients was 58 ± 14 years. Post injection time to the measurement data is averaged 3.5 ± 0.7 hours. The mean administered activity of patients is 21.4 ± 2.1 mCi. The exposure rate measured one meter away from the patient is on average 10.3 ± 3.1μSv / h, the median is 9.5 mSv / h, the mode is 9μSv / h, the minimum value is 4.92μSv / h maximum 16μSv / h. Furthermore it can be seen that there is a high and significant negative correlation (-0.92) between the post injection time exposure rate; because the half-life of technetium is 6.02horas. It is observed that there is no significant positive correlation (+0.113) between the administered activity and exposure rate, since the latter depends on several factors. Conclusion: they found that values of exposure rate at one meter away from the patient at the end of his study of bone scintigraphy with technetium 99m, are under 40uSv / h, in accordance with the implementation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Keywords: Rate exposure, administered activity, half-life, technetium 99 metastable, bone scan.
