Traffic accidents represent a particularly serious road safety problem for the Cusco region, which is characterized by a higher average number of traffic accidents compared to the national average. However, the local literature has little evidence about the effect of exogenous factors on the severity of traffic accidents and their general effect on road safety. This research seeks to study one of these exogenous factors, focusing on the effect of international and local fuel prices on road safety in the Cusco Region during the 2012-2019 period. We use data from the National Census of Police Stations, together with information on international oil prices and information on Osinergmin's reference prices. The research is correlational, with a quantitative approach and a non-experimental design. We employ a two-way fixed effects model (at the police station and year level) to establish the effect of traffic accidents on road safety. The main results suggest that an increase of 10 dollars per barrel generates a reduction of 3.5 traffic accidents, 1.4 accidents associated with vehicle speed and 1.5 accidents associated with an additional lane change per station per month. Likewise, an increase of 10 soles in the price of gasoline per gallon generates a reduction of 2 traffic accidents, and 0.9 accidents associated with an additional lane change per police station per month.
