The aim of this study was to determine the raw milk supply chain in order to verify the interrelations between the different actors and the participation of small producers to establish the efficiency or inefficiency of its commercialization. The research was carried out in the province of Concepcion part of the Mantaro Valley during the dry season (2011). We collected information by surveys on 146 farmers, 6 rural collectors and 20 processing plants, and three participative workshops. The identification of the actors in the supply chain allowed to evidence the commercialization network, to determine the gross and net margins in the producers and retailers so finally the efficiency of the market system are evaluated. The results showed that small producers have low technological development, poor trading skills (on the provision of goods and services) and low profit compared to the average. Given its low scale of operation it has a unit production cost of 0.98 S/. /L higher in relation to largest producers of 0.95 S/./L. Hence the small producers are involved in complex commercialisation channels (more than twelve channels identified) mainly on the one centralized by the processing retailer (who develop organized and unorganized markets), generating a poor distribution of net margins per unit for each agent involved in the commercialisation network. Finally, these features show that the commercialisation system of row milk in the rural market is inefficient. As a result, small producers are the most affected with a very small margin of profit, while the processing plants obtain the highest return. Despite of these distortions in the market the actors in the supply chain in rural areas, who normally lack of job opportunities, improve their standard of living due to the generation of profit.
