Rapid and unplanned urbanisation in Metropolitan Lima has resulted in the emergence of unscheduled human settlements, leaving these areas bereft of essential urban services, including waste management, potable water supply, and sewage infrastructure. This study undertakes a systematic evaluation of the efficiency of pathogen elimination from water by applying biosand filters (BSF) and intermittent slow sand filters (ISSFs). Our focus lies on their use in residential spaces of the San Antonio de Pedregal II community, located in the Lurigancho - Chosica district of the Lima region. The methodology included a detailed topographical analysis of the area and the collection of water samples for the investigation of thermotolerant coliforms, which 30 home filtres (BSF) and two communal filters (ISSFs) were buit, distributed equally in both A.H. Sunflowers and Fruit Trees. The preliminary results highlighted the unsuitability of the community's water for human consumption, primarily due to fecal contamination present in 100% of the samples. Remarkably, with the implementation of the BSF and ISSF filtration systems, we achieved a reduction of up to 98% of thermotolerant coliforms. These findings demonstrate the substantial efficacy of these filtration methods in eradicating pathogens and underscore a widely held positive perception of health benefits within the community.
