The objetive of this research was to evaluate the grain yield and the expansion capacity of 256 S1 lines. For which 256 S1 lines were evaluated, segregating from the cross of two populations: one with a high frequency of black pericarp-non-popping grain and another of colorless pericarp-popping grain. The experiment was developed on the grounds of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, for the installation the Statistical Design of Simple Lattice 16x16 with two repetitions was used. The variables studied were: days to male flowering, plant height, ear length, grain yield, pericarp pigmentation, grain moisture, weight of 100 grains, volume of 100 grains, expansion capacity, percentage of expanded grains, size. of expanded grain, hardness and flavor of the rosettes. The behavior of the 256 S1 lines was highly variable for all the characteristics evaluated. The grain yield varied from 655.01 to 7164.42 kg/ha, however, 15 lines were found that exceeded 4 t/ha, yield similar to that of the commercial hybrids, likewise, two genotypes with the highest yields were identified, these they were lines 206 and 98 with with 6637.57 and 7164.42 kg/ha, respectively. The expansion capacity varied from 0.85 to 9.86 cc/g, of the 256 S1 lines evaluated, it was possible to identify a line that had a maximum value of expansion capacity of 9.86 cc/g, however, this value is well below to that of the commercial hybrids that can reach 42.1 cc/g.
