The present experimental work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effect of potassium on the performance of three promising hard grain maize genotypes under La Molina conditions. The research was conducted in the field of the Nacional Agrarian University of La Molina, from August 2018 to February 2019. Two factors were studied: the factor Genotypes with three levels: a double hybrid (Exp-5), a free-pollinated population (Pool-19) and a single hybrid (CML-504 x CML-507) and the factor Potassium also with three levels: 0, 60 and 120 kg of K2O. The factorial experiment was set up under a randomized complete block design with four repetitions. Potassium levels were applied at two different times, one half after emergence and the other half at hilling. No interaction was detected between the levels of both factors for any characteristic. There were statistical differences between genotypes for plant height, cob height, total leaves, leaves above the cob and stem diameter, in which the double hybrid Exp-5 was statistically superior to the other two genotypes; however, there was no difference between potassium doses. Exp-5 was superior in cob length, grains per row and grain yield; the CML hybrid had the largest cob diameter, size and 10-grain length, and the Pool-19 population had larger rows per cob and 10-grain thickness. The double hybrid, Exp-5 obtained the best grain yield and reached 11 982 kg/ha and presented high significant difference compared to the Pool-19 population and the single hybrid CML-504 x CML-507, which obtained 10 439 and 9 781 kg/ha, respectively. The grain yields of the latter two genotypes were statistically similary.
