The study aimed to evaluate the use of genomic information in estimating the prediction accuracy in fiber traits from Huacaya alpacas. The specific objectives were: a) to estimate the genetic prediction accuracy of fiber traits using Best Unbiased Linear Prediction methodology (BLUP); b) to estimate the genomic prediction accuracy of fiber traits using the Single-step Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Prediction methodology (ss-GBLUP) and; c) to calculate the increase in prediction accuracy in fiber traits using genomic information. Pedigree information and phenotypic data were obtained from the data base of the Research Station Pacomarca of Inca Tops S.A. The fiber traits were fiber diameter (FD), its standard deviation (SD), and percentage of medulation (PM). A reference population of 431 animals was genotyped using an alpaca chip with 76,508 SNPs. The BLUPF90 family programs were used for breeding values prediction. The accuracies of the genetic and genomic values were obtained by using the correlation coefficient between the predicted breeding values and the deregressed values of 100 randomly selected animals for each method; a total of ten replicates were carried out. On average, the increase in accuracy using genomic information for FD was 9.8 ± 3.5%. While, for SD and PM, the increase was 29.8 ± 10.8% and 29.1 ± 6.2%, respectively. The findings suggested that adding genomic data in prediction models could be beneficial for alpaca breeding programs. Keywords: alpacas, Huacaya, fiber, BLUP, ss-GBLUP, accuracy, genomics.
