The objective of this study was to compare the carbon content between Andean wetlands and natural meadows located in the district of Pilpichaca. To accomplish this we consider two variables: elevation and profile depth found in the field. The proposed methodology consisted to open nine pits for each ecosystem, divided into three blocks and each had a representative sample at different altitudes; in each block three pits were studied. The samples were collected according to the different profiles and depth of horizons found in the field. To estimate total carbon per hectare we measured bulk density and total carbon by the Walkley and Black method. Results showed an average of 1 508 ton/ ha of carbon on wetland soils and 3 036 ton/ha of carbon on meadows. The statistical analysis indicated that with a 5% level of significance there was significant difference between the carbon content in high-Andean wetlands and meadows of the Pilpichaca district. We concluded that the altitude was the most influential variable on the carbon content between the ecosystem. Finally a preliminary estimate of the economic value of the amount of carbon stored in each ecosystem was conducted, this based on the price of carbon from the Spanish Stock Exchange.
