Abstract: Introducción: el análisis de los artículos revisados muestra la complejidad de los factores que influyen en el consumo de antibióticos, incluyendo políticas de administración, patrones de resistencia bacteriana y características del entorno (hospitalario o comunitario). Las tendencias en el uso de los grupos de antibióticos clasificados por la OMS como Access, Watch y Reserve varían según la disponibilidad, regulación y programas de optimización del uso de antimicrobianos (PROA).
Método: se revisaron estudios sobre consumo y gasto de antibióticos, seleccionados de bases de datos académicas. Los artículos incluidos seguían las directrices de la OMS y abordaban tipos de antibióticos, tendencias de costos y factores que afectan su uso. Los hallazgos se compararon para identificar patrones que influyen en la resistencia bacteriana.
Resultados: las políticas regulatorias y los programas educativos son fundamentales para reducir el uso inadecuado, especialmente en los grupos Watch y Reserve. Aunque los antibióticos Access son los más utilizados, la automedicación y percepciones erróneas siguen siendo problemas preocupantes.
Conclusión: las políticas de salud, prácticas médicas y comportamiento de la población influyen significativamente en el consumo de antibióticos, contribuyendo a la resistencia antimicrobiana. Es necesario implementar estrategias que promuevan un uso racional y efectivo de estos medicamentos.

Trends in the use of antibiotic groups classified by the WHO as Access, Watch, and Reserve vary depending on availability, regulation, and antimicrobial stewardship programs (AMS). Method: studies on antibiotic consumption and expenditure were reviewed, selected from academic databases. The included articles followed WHO guidelines and addressed types of antibiotics, cost trends, and factors affecting their use. Findings were compared to identify patterns influencing bacterial resistance. Results: regulatory policies and educational programs are essential to reducing inappropriate use, especially in the Watch and Reserve groups. Although Access antibiotics are the most commonly used, self-medication and misconceptions remain significant concerns. Conclusion: health policies, medical practices, and population behavior significantly influence antibiotic consumption, contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Strategies that promote the rational and effective use of these medications are urgently needed.
