The principal objective of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of the essential oil of Piper aduncum “matico“ compared with oxacillin 1 ug on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Four dilutions (100%, 75%, 50% and 25%) and a neutral control with DMSO were performed. It was found that Piper aduncum essential oil showed zones of inhibition at 75% dilution with 13.70 mm (SD.0.919+0.3 CI 95% (13.14-14.3)), at 100% the zone of inhibition was 16.50 mm (SD: 1.609+ 0.477. CI 95% (15.52- 17.48)); values considered effective in relation to the CSI standard (>12mm), however, it does not exceed the zone of inhibition of the drug oxacillin with 30.60 mm (SD: 1.080+0342. CI 95 %(30.7-31.2)). At concentrations of 50% and 25% no antibacterial effect was observed. ANOVA statistical analysis was highly significant with a value of p<0.01, and Tuke-test showed that the evaluated groups were homogeneous and the group with greater zone of inhibition was for oxacillin, followed by the essential oil at 100% concentration of the plant under study, showing that the greater the concentration, the greater the zone of inhibition. It is concluded that the essential oil of Piper aduncum does have an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus but it does not exceed the zone of inhibition of oxacillin.
