Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable disease. There are studies that show that it is necessary for these patients to get involved in their self-care. The objective was to describe and understand self-care in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a public hospital in Chiclayo, 2023. Qualitative study, with a descriptive design. The population was 40 people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were treated at the Las Mercedes hospital. Sampling was by convenience and the sample size was 12 participants due to saturation and redundancy. A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data. The data was processed through thematic content analysis. Three categories were obtained: a) Acquisition of healthy habits: diet, avoiding harmful habits, breathing exercises and physical activity, b) Use of traditional medicine and pharmacological treatment for COPD and crisis, c) Family support in self-care. It is concluded that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease carry out various self-care practices such as healthy eating, breathing exercises, walking, avoidance of harmful habits and allergens, proper use of inhalers, based on the health education they have received in the hospital where they they are attended to. However, they use medicinal plants or remedies, the most used are eucalyptus, camphor, maticus, and cypress. The family supports self-care by preparing a healthy diet, keeping the home clean and ventilated, and providing emotional support to cope with this disease.
