The present research addresses the problem of choosing components for personal desktop computers by individuals with limited technical knowledge in technology. A technology-based solution was implemented through an expert system, which used a recommendation system as the core for knowledge processing. To efficiently handle the processing load, microservices were used, thus dividing tasks between the different segments of the architecture. A fundamental part of this process was the identification of the essential variables that affect the choice of computer components, which served as a basis for developing the questions that would guide the collection of necessary information. These questions were subsequently validated by experts in the field, and on this basis, an inference engine was developed that operated by transforming the input data and established rules. The effectiveness of this solution was evaluated by comparing results obtained from two proposed scenarios, which were reviewed both by a web application designed for this purpose and by two technology experts. The criterion used for the evaluation was the existence of bottlenecks between the selected components and compatibility with the desired software. The results showed a significant reduction in problems, 30% and 3% in the scenarios respectively, thus evidencing that a computer tool based on expert systems can offer considerable support in the component selection process for users with little technical training in technology.
