Lake Moronacocha in Iquitos faces a severe environmental problem due to municipal wastewater discharge from the Moronacocha sewer. Although various biotechnological solutions are still being investigated, the potential of microorganisms for bioremediation has proven to be a promising alternative. This study evaluated the capacity of the cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp. UCP002 to remove ammonia nitrogen, nitrates, and iron from wastewater. Synechococcus sp. UCP002 was cultivated and subjected to four treatments over 15 days, with varying concentrations of CHU-10 medium and municipal wastewater. Its growth was monitored through changes in optical density (OD) at 730 nm and pH, and contaminant concentrations were measured before and after treatment. The results indicated that Synechococcus sp. UCP002 grew in all treatments, with an average OD of 0.136, and successfully removed 88.89% of ammonia nitrogen, 91.67% of nitrates, and 75% of iron. These findings validate the biotechnological potential of Synechococcus sp. UCP002 for the bioremediation of wastewater in Lake Moronacocha, providing an effective solution for reducing contaminants such as ammonia nitrogen, nitrates, and iron.
