Context: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard surgical management in symptomatic cholecystitis in adults and one of the most serious complications of this procedure is biliary injury. Objective: To describe the reported incidence of biliary tract injury in adult patients diagnosed with acute and chronic cholecystitis undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Latin American countries during the period 2001-2021. Evidence analysis: The search was performed in the SciELO, LILACS and PubMed databases using the keywords “Cholecystectomy, Laparoscopic” and “Bile duct injury”. In addition, one article was added by expert reference and 6 articles from gray literature. Studies were discarded due to exclusion criteria and the average number of bile duct injuries, and their mortality were calculated using Google Sheets. Conclusion: Of the 28 articles selected from 11 countries and 62,246 patients, the incidence found was 0.36% and a mortality of 9.90%.
