The results of a correlational descriptive research are presented, which examined the relationship between motivation and mathematical problem solving. Twenty-five students participated from the fifth grade of the primary level of C. P. de Barranquita, province of El Dorado in the San Martin región. Many difficulties in solving problems have been observed among students for several years, as demostrated by the latest evaluations applied by the ministry. Despite emergency measures or programs, progress has been minimal. Since the ability to solve problems is so important for the student, even beyond the classroom, it was proposed to clearly identify the relationship between motivation and mathematical problem solving. The study was conducted between August and December 2016, with a quantitative approach, using the observation as a data collection technique through its instruments, a motivation test and a problem solving test. Based on the analysis and organization of content, the results are presented in tables and graphs determining the relationship between variables and dimensions and inferring their performance in each dimension. Thus, in this study it was determined that there is a low positive correlation between the study variables; also 52% of students show a high extrinsic motivation, while in the intrinsic dimension only 8%. Only 16% of them are located in expected accomplishment in problem solving. Finally, the results are discussed by making inferences from the data. This study concluded that there is a low positive correlation between motivation and problem solving, students present a higher level of extrinsic motivation than intrinsic motivation.
