The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation using agro-industrial residues (polishing dust, rice, crished rice and coconut cake) on the performance of heifers from the San Martin region, Peru. Twenty 12-month-old criollo heifers raised extensively on Brachiaria brizantha pastures were used. The animals were randomly divided into two groups: control group (heifers grazing) and supplement group (heifers grazing and receiving supplement). Supplementation was provided starting at 17:00 hours after grazing. Daily live weight gains (kg/calf) were evaluated considering initial and final weights for 84 days. A completely randomized design with analysis of variance was used. The results indicated significant differences between the control and supplemented groups with respect to final weights (222.7 kg and 238.4 kg, respectively) and daily weight gains (288 g/heifer and 438 g/heifer, respectively). The heifers of both experimental groups did not present corpora lutea and progesterone levels were low. More heifers with functional right and left ovaries with follicles were found in the supplemented group. It is concluded that supplementation with concentrated feed based on agro-industrial residues significantly improved the daily weight gains of heifers at grazing and there were indications of improvement of ovarian development in the supplemented animals.
