Effectiveness of the Lichtenstein vs Nyhus technique in postoperative complications in indirect inguinal hernioplasty, Hospital II-1 Rioja, 2018-2019 Introduction: Inguinal hernias are common, accounting for one third of all abdominal hernias. They affect both sexes. Two thirds are indirect hernias. Hernioplasty surgery is among the most frequent in the world. Although there is no consensus on the best surgical technique to use, the aim is to compare two options to improve the results of treatment in the Hospital II-1 of Rioja, in the San Martin Region. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of the Lichtenstein technique and the Nyhus technique when analyzing post-surgical complications in indirect inguinal hernioplasty, at Hospital II-1 Rioja, 2018-2019. Material and methods: Basic, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study. The population consisted of 142 patients, stratified probabilistic sampling and the index number method were used, obtaining two strata, Lichtenstein: 60 patients and Nyhus: 44 patients. Descriptive statistics were applied using the IBM- SPSS 26 program, percentages and frequencies were used to describe the distribution of the patients and the hernioplasty techniques used. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test was used and a non-parametric distribution was obtained for the techniques studied. The techniques were compared using Mann-Whitney U test. A significance level of 0.05 was used for decision making and the average ranges of each characteristic were compared according to the type of surgery. Results: 86.5% (n=90) of the patients did not experience complications after surgery. 11.5% (n=12), faced one complication, while 1.9% (n=2) had two complications. Of those operated with the Liechtenstein technique, a total of 18.3% (n=11) had postoperative complications. As for the Nyhus technique, 11.4% (n=5) presented complications. The Nyhus technique showed a mean operative time of (66.57) versus the Liechtenstein technique of (42.18). In addition, the Nyhus technique had an average hospital stay of (58.55) versus the Liechtenstein technique of (48.07). Regarding complications, the Liechtenstein technique had an average of (8.95) and the Nyhus technique (7.50). Likewise, it was determined that there are no significant differences, since the significance level is greater than 0.05 (sig.=0.324). Conclusion: The Lichtenstein technique is more efficient than the Nyhus technique in terms of operative time and hospital stay. However, in terms of postoperative complications, there is not enough statistical evidence available to determine whether the Lichtenstein technique is more effective than the Nyhus technique.
