Drinking water distribution networks are systems that aim to provide drinking water to the population. Carrying out the proper design of water distribution networks has a high degree of difficulty due to hydraulic and economic aspects, failure to do so results in water leaks. The causes of water leaks are classified as physical and operational. The physical ones are factors to which control and prevention actions can be applied, among them we find: inadequate diameter, inadequate pressure and inadequate water velocity in the pipes. The operational ones are uncontrollable factors such as third-party action, natural disasters, others. (Albarrán Ulsen, and others, 1997). The problem of water leakage is evident in the district of Tarapoto by Emapa San Martín, company responsible for the supply of drinking water; this has reported in recent year’s significant leakage of water of physical cause; in 2015, 612 leaks were detected. In 2016, 1611 leaks were detected, suggesting that an adequate hydraulic analysis has not been carried out. The objective of this study is to develop a system based on the model of the genetic algorithm to improve the process of calculating the diameter of the pipelines of drinking water distribution networks. With this objective, the research question is as follows: "How to improve the calculation of the diameter of the pipes of a drinking water distribution network in the district of Tarapoto?” The question of the research is answered through a cross-applied applied study, in which the appreciation of a civil engineering career professional was had, comparing the influence of the diameters on the pressure, speed and cost of each pipeline obtained with a manual (pre-test) and automated method (system based on the model of the genetic algorithm). The answer obtained indicates that, with the application of the computer system based on the model of the genetic algorithm, 100% of the pipes have the proper diameter, in comparison with the manual method that reached only 38% of the pipes have the diameter suitable.
