The following research titled as: Prevalence and the factors associated with the suicide and suicide attempt with “Barbasco” Lonchocarpus utilis - in patients treated at Moyobamba II-2 Hospital, San Martín Region between 2014-2016, was carried out with the purpose of identifying the prevalence and associated factors for an individual to make the decision to commit suicide or suicide. In Peru, according to the Ministry of Health, there are relatively frequent cases of suicide attempts by ingestion of barbasco, legume whose root contains rotenone, which is a natural toxic. Objective: To determine the prevalence and the factors associated with the suicide and suicide attempt with barbasco in patients treated at Moyobamba II-2 Hospital, San Martín Region between 2014-2016. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted and a form was applied to obtain the data of the medical records of 51 participants who ingested barbasco. In patients who survived or attempted suicide, the Sad Persons Test was applied to rate the factors associated with the suicide attempt. The data was processed in the IBM SPSS v program. 23.0. Results: The prevalence was 32%. The most frequent participants were between 16 and 30 years old and represent 49%, with an average of 27.81 ± 12.9 years, the female gender 68.6%, all had some kind of instruction, were single (62.7%), agricultural occupation (52.3% ) and suicide mortality was 27.5%. Among the associated factors were severe depression (19.6%) and sexual abuse (17.6%). The variables as a factor associated with the suicide attempt qualified with the Sad Persons Test are sexual abuse (OR 3.61), drug addiction (OR 1.95), physical violence (OR 3.09; CI 1.90 - 5.02; p = 0.04), impulsive behavior (OR 1.24), previous suicide attempt (OR 1.70) and chronic terminal disease (OR 1.24). Conclusions: The prevalence of desire to die by suicide was high. Individuals with suicide and suicide attempts are young while the associated factors were severe depression and sexual abuse. SAD PERSONS test score presents a high risk in 45.9% of patients with attempted suicide. The associations identified should be evaluated in subsequent studies with a larger population.
