The main cause of soil degradation is shifting agriculture, characterized by slash-and-burn practices to cultivate crops for self-consumption. A good alternative to reverse this problem is Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) which, when associated with leguminous cover crops, stimulate nitrogen-fixing activity and nutrient absorption, contributing to the recovery of degraded soils and the partial or total substitution of inorganic fertilizers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the functional compatibility between cover legume species and AMF selected from degraded soils. For this purpose, four legume species (Cajanus cajan, Crotalaria juncea, Canavalia ensiformis and Vigna unguiculata) were evaluated in association with three types of fungi (Acaulospora rugosa, Acaulospora sp. and Ambispora appendicula) and a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a 4 x 4 factorial arrangement was used. The results showed that the legume Canavalia ensiformis inoculated with the fungus Acaulospora rugosa presented the greatest plant height (271.67 cm), Crotalaria juncea inoculated with Acaulospora sp had the greatest number of leaves (149.33), Crotalaria juncea inoculated with Acaulospora sp showed more fresh aerial biomass (88.3 g) and Crotalaria juncea inoculated with Acaulospora sp had the greatest dry biomass (27.52 g). In addition, the legume Vigna unguiculata inoculated with Acaulospora rugosa achieved a higher percentage of colonization (71.48%) and Vigna unguiculata inoculated with Acaulospora sp obtained a higher number of spores (600). On the other hand, the interaction that showed the highest phosphorus content (5.01%) was the legume Cajanus cajan when inoculated with Ambispora appendicula. Finally, it is concluded that the interactions of AMF with legume species are very different in each of the indicators under study, but the species of mycorrhizal fungi that showed the best degree of compatibility are Acaulospora rugosa and Acaulospora sp. as demonstrated by the indicators studied on the different plant species.
