The objective of this study was "To determine the association of maternal characteristics with the weight of the newborn in parturient adolescent attended in Tarapoto II - 2 Hospital, July - December 2017", it is a non - experimental, quantitative, transversal, descriptive correlational study, the population was 416 and the sample was 199 cases of adolescent parturient. The technique was the documentary review and as an instrument data collection card. Results: the maternal characteristics of the parturient adolescent attended at Tarapoto II-2 Hospital were; sociodemographic and economic: age between 15 to 19 years (95.0%), civil cohabitation (79.4%), urban origin (49.7%), secondary education degree (54.8%); nutritional status, normal (80.9%); low socioeconomic level (74.4%), performs unskilled work (88.9%), rape (1.5%). Obstetric characteristics: inadequate prenatal care because they are located in <5 NPC (56.3%), parity between 0 - 1 delivery (97.0%), full term pregnancy (84.4%). 91.0% presented obstetric pathologies: such as RPM (22.6%), EHIE (5.0%), prolonged labor (13.1%), prolonged expulsive 8.5%, placental insufficiency (7.5 %). According to perinatal complications were prematurity (13.1%), low birth weight (11.1%), intrauterine growth retardation (7.5%). Newborns by weight were: low weight or hypo trophic 88.4%, appropriate weight 11.1% and 0.5% high or hypertrophic weight. The maternal characteristics of greater associated to the weight of the newborn are: age between 15 - 19 years (X2 = 18,995, p = 0,000) (p <0,05) and gestational age <37 weeks) (X2 = 43,509; p = 0.000) (p <0.05). In conclusion: There is a significant association between maternal characteristics and the weight of the newborn by age between 15 - 19 years (X2 = 18,995, p = 0.000) (p <0.05), inadequate prenatal care (<5) (X2 = 15.598, p = 0.004) and gestational age <37 weeks) (X2 = 43.509, p = 0.000) (p <0.05).
