The present research project consisted of a soil mechanics study corresponding to the clayey soils of the Lamas district, determining the influence of the plastic index with the optimum moisture content of high and low plasticity clayey soils applied in road pavement in the district of Lamas. The first step was the collection of theoretical information, as well as the collection of 16 different samples of clayey soils, and the subsequent laboratory testing of soils: granulometry, liquid limit, plastic limit, modified Proctor compaction, soil classification using the AASHTO and SUCS systems. Finally, an application curve was obtained between the plasticity index and the optimum moisture content, and the relationship between the plasticity index and the optimum moisture content was determined, showing that the plasticity index, as it increases, has a maximum value with which the maximum optimum moisture content is obtained, once the maximum optimum moisture content is obtained and as the plasticity index increases, the optimum moisture content decreases for high and low plasticity clayey soils. Using all the data obtained, a comparison was made between the granulometry and the Atterberg Limits with the minimum parameters established in the quality that materials to be used in road pavements must meet. It was concluded that the soils under study do not meet the minimum requirements established in the Highway Manual: General Technical Specifications for Construction, therefore, it was recommended that the study material be combined with granular material until the minimum parameters of the material used as a pavement are met; this combination should be confirmed by a soil mechanics laboratory test.
