The aim of the study "Determine the profile and perception of the backpacker tourist visiting the Province of San Martin, 2018", the research was basic, non-experimental, quantitative, the sample consisted of 182 tourists. The technique was the survey and the instrument was the questionnaire. Results: the backpacker tourist is characterized by being of Venezuelan nationality 13.3% and Chilean 12.2%; 65.7% male; 63.5% are between 18 - 29 years old; they are technicians 64.1%; occupation 80.1% dependent; monthly economic income 71.8% between $1000- $2500; transportation was airline 65.7%; travel with partner 38.1%. Spending made was between $500-$2000 in 68.0%. According to psychographic characteristics, as aspects for the trip: 27.1% was for gastronomy, 13.8% for tourist attractions. Among the inconveniences presented, 34.8% were deficient information; regarding the tourist activities carried out, 40.3% practiced trekking; 39.8% stayed in a hostel. The time of permanence was one week 80.7%; regarding gastronomy 59.7%. The means of information was social networks in 64.6%. The main motivation was to learn about their customs in 21.5%; the perceived risk was to get sick in 26.0%. In conclusion, the backpacker tourist comes from Venezuela and Chile, aged between 18 and 29 years, male, with technical studies, dependent worker, with an income of $1000-$2500, uses the airline as a means of transportation, mostly travels as a couple, spends $500-$2000, travels for a week, uses social networks as a means of communication, is motivated to know new places and customs, perceives the risk of getting sick and the climate as a risk. Therefore, the research hypothesis is accepted, in that the backpacker tourist profile is determined by age, economic resources and the risk of getting sick.
