The general objective of this research was to determine the influence of citizen participation in solid waste management at the household level in the sector of Los Algarrobos in the district of Moyobamba. In order to analyze these variables to optimize solid waste management, a solid waste management program was designed as a proposal and contribution to the research. In terms of citizen participation, the following dimensions were considered: informative, consultative, enforcement and civic; in the solid waste management variable, the following dimensions were considered: generation, segregation, reuse and storage. In the operational part, two questionnaires were applied to a sample of 32 randomly selected citizens, reaching the conclusion that the level of citizen participation in solid waste management is deficient due to their low participation in processes such as environmental training, training in environmental standards, initiatives related to protection and dissemination of environmental education, both at home and in their neighborhood. It is concluded that the lack of citizen participation in waste minimization at home, in the segregation of waste into organic and inorganic, the delivery of their separated waste to the collection personnel, the classification of their waste, the reuse of their waste and the promotion of recycling activities make the management of solid waste deficient in terms of its generation, segregation, reuse and storage. Finally, it is concluded that there is a high correlation between citizen participation and solid waste management; in other words, good waste management depends in part on the participation of citizens in its treatment.
