This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Medicago sativa and Taraxacum officinale species in the removal of heavy metals (Pb, Hg and Cd) from the soil of the Yacucatina dump. For this purpose, an experimental study was selected with two treatments, a control (dumpsite soil) and three replicates, making a total of nine experimental units. The average concentration of lead in the dumpsite soil was 9.41 mg/kg; this value does not exceed the environmental soil quality standard for this metal (70 mg/kg). Furthermore, it was not possible to determine point values for mercury concentration, since they were below the detection limits of the method (<0.1 mg/kg), while, for cadmium, an average concentration of 5.60 mg/kg was found, exceeding the environmental quality standard of 1.4 mg/kg. After applying the phytoremediation technique with the M. sativa species, an average lead concentration of 8.50 mg/kg was found in the dumpsite soil, while with the T. officinale species, the lead concentration was 7.39 mg/kg; both values do not exceed the Environmental Soil Quality Standard for this metal (70 mg/kg). Likewise, an average cadmium concentration of 1.13 mg/kg was found in the dumpsite soil with M. sativa, while with the species T. officinale, the cadmium concentration was 1.36 mg/kg; both values do not exceed the Soil Environmental Quality Standard for this metal (1.4 mg/kg). Regarding the removal efficiencies of heavy metals, the species M. sativa presented a soil lead removal efficiency of 9.68%, while with T. officinale, the removal efficiency was 21.57%; likewise, for cadmium removal, the species M. sativa, obtained an efficiency of 79.82%, while with T. officinale, the removal efficiency was 75.71%. Finally, the species that retained the highest amount of lead was T. officinale, while the species that removed the highest amount of cadmium was M. sativa, therefore, both species can be used promisingly for soil decontamination of toxic substances such as heavy metals.
