The objective of this study was to describe the benefits of using oregano extract (Origanum sp) to control leaf spot in rice crops in the province of Rioja, San Martin. Regarding the methodology, the study was descriptive and exploratory, using reliable sources and bibliographic background of the last 5 years. A characterization of the area affected by leaf spot was carried out, and the impacts of the use of oregano extract in the control of leaf spot were also explained. It is concluded that the area affected by leaf spot in the rice crop in the basin of the province of Rioja is 16,177.93ha-1 , with the largest areas being Nueva Cajamarca, Rioja and Naranjillo, 7.2% on average are affected by leaf spot in the crop, with Nueva Cajamarca and Yuracyacu being affected with 9% and 8%, generating an additional economic cost to the producer for the control of this fungus. The impacts of the use of oregano extract (Oreganum vulgare) in the control of leaf spot of rice are economic, social and environmental: in the crop stages, it reduces the use of agrochemicals, controls diseases, greater number of tillers, resistance to stress, greater number of plants, better root development, reduces the use of synthetic fertilizers, production cost, number of empty grains caused by the fungus. It is a good organic alternative to obtain good quality and productivity of this crop.
