The objective of this research was to determine the agroforestry systems of cocoa plantations in the province of Rioja, San Martin region, during the period 2022. Regarding the methodology, the study was descriptive and exploratory, using reliable sources and bibliographic background of the last 5 years, agroforestry systems of cocoa in the province of Rioja, San Martin region were described, and the benefits of agroforestry systems in cocoa plantations in the province of Rioja, San Martin region were also determined. It is concluded that there are six agroforestry systems associated with cocoa cultivation in the province of Rioja, San Martin region, which are: cultivation without shade, associated with other crops, with varied shade, rustic and in agroforests, which represent a sustainable and beneficial agricultural strategy for both the environment and farmers. These systems combine cocoa cultivation with carefully selected shade trees, some of them are associated with a single species, several species, other crops, natural forest, agroforests, diversifying the agricultural landscape by promoting the interaction between the different species. In terms of the benefits of agroforestry systems in cocoa plantations in the province of Rioja, they provide a series of benefits that contribute to the sustainability and productivity of the crop, offering an integral solution by combining production with soil conservation, improved water quality, carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, and resilience to extreme weather events. They also have disadvantages such as lower productivity at the beginning, crop management is more complex. Likewise, the province has 207 producers engaged in this activity with a total of 1209.50 ha-1 at a yield of 0.98 t/ha-1.
