In the present investigation the efficiency of a biological filter system for the removal of contaminants from domestic wastewater was evaluated. It was based on a tank divided into three compartments, the first served as a settler to remove solids carried by water; the second contained the filter medium where the bacteria that treated the water were adhered; the third was filled with sand, this helped to clarify the water. The system operated with a constant flow rate of 42.43 mL / sec on average and with the sampling performed at 40, 55, 71 and 91 days of treatment the percentage of efficiency of the biological filter system was determined. In BOD5 it is observed that the highest efficiency with 85.40%, was performed after 40 days of treatment, with concentrations of 685 mg / L in the affluent and 100 mg / L in the effluent. In COD, the highest efficiency with 82.36% was given at 40 days, with concentrations of 1100 mg / L in the affluent and 194 mg / L in the effluent. In the TSS, the highest efficiency with 81.27% also occurred at 40 days, with concentrations of 785 mg / L in the affluent and 147 mg / L in the effluent. In the Thermotolerant Coliforms with concentrations of 6180 CFU / 100 mL in the affluent and 484 CFU / 100 mL in the effluent, the highest efficiency with 97.17% occurred at 91 days respectively. These results indicate that the system used is efficient, decreasing the concentration of pollutants and complying with the LMP for effluents from domestic wastewater treatment plants as indicated in D.S No. 003-2010-MINAM.
