Buffer zones are in legal terms "Those areas adjacent to the Protected Natural Areas of the system, which by their nature and location require special treatment to ensure the conservation of the protected area." If we take this normative argument as a reference, these spaces can be understood too simplistically; the present study addresses the complexity and importance of these spaces and propose technical criteria to guide the competent entity, the National Service of Protected Natural Areas by the State (SERNANP) and other competent authorities, in the delimitation and management of these as the regional and local governments, to define the boundaries of these zones. For that, the historical evaluation and the current situation of the establishment of buffer zones in Perú was carried out, as part of the development of a methodological proposal called ZAM, the same that through five steps, allows us to discern about the existence or not of these technical criteria; these steps contemplate: bibliographic review, compilation of information from primary sources, systematization, organization and description of the results obtained; the methodology allowed the identification of the "aspects" considered for the establishment of buffer zones in the past, and that based on current needs have been raised in the framework of an ideal process for the establishment of such areas. These have been systematized and raised within a hierarchical order, within the framework of dimensions, principles and criteria. The results obtained from the research response to a need identified within the National System of Natural Protected Areas by the State (SINANPE); and are aligned to the institutional planning processes of SERNANP, so they could be applied within the framework of its processes. The results of this study have been applied whit members of the technical team of SERNANP of two natural protected areas, The Purus National Park and the Alto Purus Communal Reserve, as well as representatives of the Implementing Agreement for the Management of the second ECOPURUS.
