Efficiency of electrocoagulation at laboratory level for oil and grease removal from domestic wastewater. Moyobamba, 2021 During the last few years, wastewater treatment became essential both for the care of the environment and for the activities carried out by human beings in their environment, thus the need of finding new, more efficient, economical and environmentally friendly technologies for its treatment, For this reason, electrocoagulation was used in this research to reduce the oils and greases present in domestic wastewater, having as general objective to determine the efficiency of electrocoagulation in the removal of oils and greases from domestic wastewater at laboratory level and the specific objectives to determine the initial concentration of oils and greases in domestic wastewater; to determine the current density and optimum time of electrocoagulation for oil and grease removal; to evaluate the effect of electrocoagulation in the removal of oil and grease concentration and to compare with the MPL. The research took place in the city of Moyobamba, in the district of Belen, Shango sector, during a period of 12 months. A transparent Batch reactor of acrylic material was built with dimensions of 20 cm long, 15 cm wide and 14 cm high with a free edge of 4 cm for the formation of creams, thus giving a useful volume of 4.2 L. Inside the reactor 6 aluminum electrodes were placed, measuring 10 cm long and 10 cm wide, which in turn were connected to an external current source. Subsequently, an analysis of the parameters of oils and grease and turbidity was carried out to determine their initial concentration. In the experimental part, the domestic wastewater was subjected to treatment by electrocoagulation with current densities of 33 A/m2 and 50 A/m2 for 25 and 30 minutes with each of them. Finally, four post-treatment analyses of oils and grease and turbidity were carried out to determine their final concentration and thus determine the removal percentages, with the following results: 92.55 % removal for oils and grease and 84.52 % removal for turbidity. It was concluded that the efficiency of electrocoagulation in the removal of oils and grease from domestic wastewater at laboratory level is high, reaching and being below the required MPLs, in addition to concluding that the optimal current density and treatment time to remove oils and grease from the wastewater studied is 50 A/m2 and 30 minutes respectively.
