Obesity is positioned as one of the most important health problems in the world, and is the cause of many diseases, such as cardiovascular, metabolic and even joint diseases; depression, on the other hand, is a disease that represents a low mood, sleep or appetite disorder, as well as lack of interest in daily life, among other characteristics. Objective: To evaluate the association between obesity and depressive symptoms in university students of the health area of the National University of San Martín. Materials and Methods: The study design is basic, cross-sectional, observational, and analytical. The sample size consisted of 216 participants, and an online questionnaire was used with perceived socioeconomic data, anthropometric data such as weight and height measured at the time of filling out the survey, in addition to the PHQ-9 questionnaire. Results: In the investigation of students in the health area, where the sample was 216 students, most of the participants were women (59.7%), with a median age of 22 years, and the career that most participated was medicine with 46.8%, and the fifth year of study was the most prevalent (24.5%). Most of them came from an urban area (78.2%), and the most prevalent socioeconomic status was low superior (38.9%). In conclusion, there is a prevalence of depression with some degree of depressive symptoms in 74.06% of students in the health area, and the result of the prevalence of the obesity variable in the sample studied was 9.06%, in addition, the risk of suffering from depression in obese people was 4.36 times more with respect to normal weight people (PRa, 4.36; IC95% 2.43-7.60). Conclusions: It is concluded that obesity and depressive symptoms present association with statistical significance.
