The first contact that hydrocarbons spills and leaks have is the soil; it is contaminated and it does not achieve its natural functions in this way. The main objective ofthis research is to determine the degree of soil contamination caused by hydrocarbons in the areas occupied by those facilities of the factory, yard machinery, asphalt production plant and fue! zone during the section IV !quitos- Nauta Highway construction. The soil contaminations sources by hydrocarbons were the yard machinery, asphalt plant and fue! zone. We did soil samples of each source in order to characterize them physically (granulometría, organic matter content, natural density and percentage humidity) 30 and 20 cm depth; soil samples of 15, 30 and 30 cm dept to chemical analysis to determine the totals hydrocarbons as well as the permanent physical measurement of the contaminated soil volume. The sampling frequency was done on the basis of development of the work; taking a sample on each monitoring point befo re the starting of the highway construction (test sample), after 40% and 70% ofthe work headway to the physical characterization and the 40%, 70%, 80% and 90% of the work headway to the chemical analysis. The results of the chemical analysis to the two first monitoring did not register values of concentration of total hydrocarbons to a 30 cm, depth, in soils determinated by means of laboratory physical analysis is clayish to the machinery yard and asphalt plant, a sand slime soil type to the fue! zone. In the third sampling of 15 cm depth, with slight modification in the type of soil, from clayish to sand-clayish, were registered total hydrocarbons concentrations of 6721 mg/Kg of soil in the asphalt zone and 23573 gr/Kg ofsoil ofthe machinery yard in sand-slimy soil type. In the fourth and fifth sampling of20 cm depth, were registered smaller concentrations than the previous one of 5580 and 4225 mg/Kg of soil of the machinery yard, 777 and 970 mg/Kg of soil in the asphalt plant, and 23.7 and 112 mg/Kg. ofsoil in the fue! zone. The total contaminated soil volume was 120. 1234 m3 during the work execution. The total hydrocarbon concentrations from third to fifth sampling in the zone of the machinery yard exceeded the permissible maximum limits of reference, contaminating the soil.
