Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a fundamental role in the nutrition and resistance of terrestrial plants, in addition to helping soil fertility. Coffee is one of the most economically important crops worldwide; it forms associations with AMF that promote its development. The general objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of these two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the vegetative development of coffee plants, of the caturra variety, in four provinces of the San Martin region. Experimental plots were installed in the localities of Barranquita (Moyobamba, Jepelacio), Huayali (Picota, Tres Unidos), Requena (El Dorado, San Martín de Alao) and Palmiche (Lamas, Pinto Recodo). Coffee plants, caturra variety, were inoculated with native strains Rhizoglomus variabile (100 %) and Nanoglomus plukenetiae (100 %), their combination (1:1), which were compared with a control without inoculation. For 300 days, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and chlorophyll content were evaluated by the Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) method. In soil and rhizosphere samples associated with each plant, overall AMF spore abundance, morphospecies richness, Shannon Wiener structure (H') and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index, and overall AMF colonization percentage were determined. R. variabile was associated with an increase in height, stem diameter and chlorophyll content. Inoculation had no adverse effects on overall AMF diversity, although environmental effects of each location or plot were found. As a limitation, the prevalence of the inoculants used as treatments was not determined. N. plukenetiae showed a high percentage of colonization more associated with the behavior of the species due to its life strategy in ecological terms. It is concluded that mycorrhizal inoculation with R. variabile promotes greater plant development, evidenced in plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and chlorophyll content in coffee plants, caturra variety, 10 months old, in the four locations. The incorporation of the R. variable strain in technical assistance programs is recommended, as an input that contributes to the development of coffee in the first year of crop establishment. Further research should deepen studies on taxonomic identity and the response of the AMF community structure to inoculation.
