The main objective of this research was to evaluate the basic environmental sanitation and prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases in the town of Shucshuyacu, the type of research was basic with a correlational level, whose research design was descriptive correlational; the instruments to evaluate the basic environmental sanitation and the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases in the town of Shucshuyacu were the questionnaire and the observation sheet. The research hypothesis tested is: Basic environmental sanitation is related to the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases in the town of Shucshuyacu. The basic environmental sanitation conditions were identified: drinking water supply; excreta disposal and/or wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal where 40.44% of the families live in poor conditions and 59.56% in a good condition, which is reflected with 15.22% of families presenting a low level of prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases, 53.91% a medium level and 30.87% a high level. Finally, it was determined that the components of basic environmental sanitation: Drinking water supply; excreta disposal and/or wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal, are related to the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases in the town of Shucshuyacu, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r1= - 0.8866, r2= - 0.9292, r3 = - 0.9352 and r4 = - 0.9349, which affirms that the basic environmental sanitation variable has a very high negative inverse correlation with the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases.
