The main objective of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the district of Trujillo, La Libertad. To this end, 80 patients were evaluated corresponding to non-diabetic patients, considered the control group and diabetics, all of them between 20 and 80 years of age. The design was single-cell, and the activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase was evaluated as a marker of oxidative stress; associated age, gender, glucose concentration, BUN/creatine ratio and renal status. The data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics (correlation, Anova and Tukey test). The results show that diabetic patients have enzyme activity on average higher than the normal range, but as the time of the disease progresses the activity decreases; compared to non-diabetic patients who have normal activity and increased in the case of males. We conclude that, in non-diabetics, superoxide dismutase enzyme is positively and moderately related to sex; being the relationship negative and average with age; while, with glucose, the relationship is positive and average. In diabetics, SOD is negatively and moderately related to age and BUN.
