This study focuses on redesigning the intersection of Avenida Lurigancho and Avenida Los Regadores to reduce traffic congestion in a high-traffic area. A detailed inspection of current conditions revealed that congestion is primarily due to road deterioration, lack of signage and traffic lights, and increased vehicle flow driven by nearby commercial establishments like the Makro supermarket and Mall Aventura. The methodology involved modeling both the current situation and the proposed improvements using VISSIM software, evaluating various geometric redesigns and traffic signal timing options. The final design includes a 200-second traffic signal cycle divided into two phases, with dedicated pedestrian crossing times of 8 seconds on the west side and 12 seconds on the north side. A central median, 1.20 meters wide, was also added in the southbound access to separate traffic directions. Results showed a 50.28% reduction in average queue lengths and a decrease in waiting times by 42% to 64%, improving the intersection’s level of service from E and F to C and D. In conclusion, the implemented measures proved effective in optimizing traffic flow and enhancing intersection functionality.
