The purpose of this research is to empirically demonstrate the impact of capital structure on the profitability of banks in Peru. Understanding this relationship is important, because an improvement in profitability facilitates the permanence of a company over time. In order to measure this relationship, a panel data econometric technique is used to integrate the data corresponding to 14 banks during the period between 2010 and 2019. In addition, first and second degree fixed effects models were built and estimated to analyze how capital structure influences profitability, measured by return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). Additionally, previous literature indicates that there is causality between these variables, so endogeneity is corrected using instrumental variables. The main results obtained indicate that there is a quadratic and significant relationship between capital structure for both ROA and ROE, which is shown in a concave manner. Furthermore, according to the literature, deposit ratio, asset quality, bank size, overall capital ratio, liquidity and economic growth have an influence on the performance of banks, and are used as control variables, which are also shown to be mostly significant and with a relationship in accordance with the empirical literature.
