This research work presents the proposal, development, and execution of a design for embankments founded on soft soils and a floodable area filled with Expanded Polystyrene (Geofoam), as part of its application in geotechnical and road engineering works. In addition, a calculation method is proposed to determine the lateral thrusts produced by a Soil-Geofoam filling system. Expanded Polystyrene (Geofoam) is widely used in Latin America, but in Peru it has not yet been incorporated as an alternative material for geotechnical and road engineering works; this due to the lack of research to test the properties of the Geofoam in interaction with soil characteristic of the Peruvian territory. The research was carried out as follows: Basic studies stage and design proposal. Experimental run stage and evaluation of the design proposal; where it was executed reduced-scale models to be evaluated under flood conditions and memory calculations of the embankment design and modeling with software were made. Finally, the stage of execution and construction of the definitive design proposal; As part of this stage, a design validation was performed with a non-standardized static load test. carried out 28 days after the completion of the embankment. With the results obtained and the information collected in this research work, a milestone is established for the use of Geofoam in Geotechnical and road engineering works in Peru, establishing new design parameters, and providing the Peruvian engineering community with a vision to look for alternative technological resources, and friendly to the environment, in addition to being technically efficient.
