Osteoporosis is a public health problem worldwide, affects more than 200 million people. It is estimated that 30% to50% of postmenopausal women suffer from it. In the city of Iquitos there are a total of approximately 321 cases of postmenopausal osteoporosis reported by the Regional Health Directorate of Loreto in the four districts (Belen, San Juan, Iquitos and Punchana), for which it was determined to carry out a study entitled "Factors of risk and knowledge on osteoporosis in postmenopausal women of Iquitos”. Objective: Determine the relationship between risk factors and knowledge about osteoporosis in postmenopausal women from Iquitos. Material and methods: The study was descriptive, non-experimental, quantitative; and it was prospective design for the variable. The sample was 175 patients with a medical diagnosis of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women in the four districts of Iquitos. The instruments applied in this study were two: A questionnaire on risk factors for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and a questionnaire on knowledge of osteoporosis. Results: With regard to sociocultural characteristics, postmenopausal women in whom osteoporosis has been detected 44.5% are cohabiting, 55.3% work at home, level of education: 26.8% incomplete secondary, age: 28.8% of 75-80 years, weight 38.8% from 61 kg or more. Regarding modifiable risk factors: 57.75 of women with postmenopausal osteoporosis have a high risk factor, 42.35 have a low risk factor. It is important to emphasize that the highest percentage (76.7%) is represented by the high level of knowledge and the lowest percentage (23.3%) is located in the medium knowledge, the relationship of the 2 variables shows that 23.3% of postmenopausal women with medium knowledge about osteoporosis have high risk factors. Besides, 51.5% of postmenopausal women with high knowledge about osteoporosis have low risk factors. The values of Chi Square = 10.566, p = 0.001 and Kendall's Tau b correlation coefficient = - 0.320 indicate that there is a significant relation between knowledge about osteoporosis and risk factors in postmenopausal women from Iquitos and that the negative correlation indicates that the greater the knowledge about osteoporosis, the lower the risk factors and vice versa. In conclusion there is a statistically significant relation between risk factors and knowledge about osteoporosis in postmenopausal women from Iquitos.
