Anemia is considered a frequent nutritional problem in the world population, especially in vulnerable groups; pregnancy being one of these risk groups, which can lead to consequences in the newborn, so in the present study was proposed as an objective to determine if maternal anemia is a condition associated with prematurity in newborns treated at the Hospital Iquitos support during the year 2017. The present study was of a non-experimental, observational, analytical, retrospective, case-control type. The population included 30 cases of premature newborns, taking 3 controls for each case. Among the results it is mentioned that maternal anemia occurred in 53, 3 % of cases and in the control group in 20 %. The data analysis of the present study shows that maternal anemia increases on average 5 times the risk of having a premature newborn (p-value less than 0.05), with a confidence interval ranging from 1, 889 to 11, 064. cases of moderate and severe maternal anemia found did not meet the selection criteria, so it is not possible to determine the association of these with premature newborns, this being a limitation of the study. The present study concludes that maternal anemia is a risk factor associated with prematurity in newborns treated at the Hospital Apoyo Iquitos during the year 2017.
