Natural protected areas (ANP) are areas of great scenic value that are home to high biodiversity, which attracts many tourists. However, these areas often have nearby populations that are affected by tourism, either positively or negatively. In the case of Peru, Los Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge (RVSLPV) is the only ANP located in an urban environment, which represents a challenge for its sustainable use. Therefore, the present study analyzed the social impacts generated by tourism in the RVSLPV, as perceived by local residents. A qualitative methodology was used that included content analysis of selected sources to identify social impacts of tourism, which were probed through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The study revealed a predominantly positive perception of local residents on the 11 social impacts of tourism in the RVSLPV that were assessed in this study. Among them, it was found that tourism promotes environmental education, improves public infrastructure, and strengthens the sense of belonging and local pride. However, opinions were divided as to whether or not tourism fosters employment and economic growth, citizen security, and cultural exchange in the area. Also, a new negative social impact emerged indicating that the tourist attraction of the RVSLPV may be indirectly generating encroachment. Finally, solutions are suggested to counteract the negative social impacts of tourism in the area.
