This study explores the key aspects of volunteer management in international sports events, with focus on the planning of such management. The research originated from the lack of organized strategies for recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers in these events in Peru, which can negatively impact their success. To identify effective practices for comprehensive planning, an analysis of relevant academic research and interviews with experts in sports event organization was conducted. The methodology employed combined a thorough review of literature on volunteer management and semi-structured interviews with sports managers responsible for volunteer planning at three different international sports events in Peru. Data collection focused on four dimensions: recruitment and selection, training, retention, and performance. These stages covered everything from volunteer recruitment to establishing criteria and practices to ensure their commitment and performance during the event. The results highlight the importance of adapting the selection process to the event’s needs, incorporating language skills and prior experience in international events as key factors. Regarding training, the need for a comprehensive approach to ensure optimal volunteer performance is emphasized. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors proved essential in retention, while continuous feedback and performance measurement were identified as key for ongoing improvement. In conclusion, flexible volunteer management planning adapted to the event’s context is recommended. This study provides a foundation for future research aiming to delve deeper into specific strategies to optimize the planning and management of volunteers in international sporting events.
