In 2022, 6,707 formal companies were registered in the leather and footwear industry, of which 95.6% are microenterprises, also known as SMEs. These companies have low competitiveness and face financial difficulties due to limited access to credit, which represents only 0.7% of loans in the Manufacturing sector (PRODUCE, 2024). In contrast, in developed countries such as the U.S. and China, companies in this industry stand out for their high levels of performance, driven by the demand to meet rigorous quality standards and access to financing at competitive rates, which can reach as low as 5% (Epede & Wang, 2022). In Peru, the lack of adequate quality management in processes and the generation of waste in SMEs directly affect their ability to compete in the market. This research aims to promote good waste management practices in Peruvian SMEs. In the case study, a waste rate of 28.07% was observed, considerably higher than the sector average of 17.10%. To address this situation, Lean Manufacturing tools such as 5S, inventory management, and work standardization were implemented, along with Systematic Layout Planning (SLP), achieving a reduction in waste to 12.39% in a pilot test.
