The purpose of this research is to determine the influence that short columns have on the structural performance of a building. For this research, the classrooms of the I.E. N.º 64443 in CC.NN. de Camisea in the district of Megantoni will be taken as a reference, since the formation of the short column effect is evident in certain sectors. Likewise, in order to determine the influence that the short column will have on the performance of the structure, a model will be carried out using the Etabs software, of a certain chosen sector. In addition, the configuration of the loads and spectra was carried out in accordance with Peruvian regulations. This in order to be able to carry out a linear analysis and a non-linear analysis of the structure; in order to be able to determine the behavior of the hinges in the face of a seismic event. In this way, a clearer notion of how short columns can affect a building will be obtained. The results obtained from the above-mentioned analyses showed that the capacity curve enters the plastic zone more quickly when the short column effect is present in the structural elements. Also, the performance level obtained when the short columns are present is close to collapse, while when the short columns are not present, life is spared.
