Objective: To determine the association between flossing and periodontitis in adults in the United States of America between 2013 to 2014. Materials and methods: Observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study, the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was used. Periodontitis was classified as clinical attachment loss ≥ 2 mm on two or more nonadjacent teeth. For flossing, the question "How many days per week did you floss or use any other device to clean your teeth?" was used. In addition, demographic characteristics, last visit to the dentist, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and diabetes were assessed. Absolute and relative frequencies were reported for qualitative variables, as well as mean and standard error for age, and the proportion of people with periodontitis was compared with co-variables using Chi-square. For the association between periodontitis and flossing, a Poisson regression with robust variance was performed using a crude model and adjusted for all co-variables, reporting prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals Results: Of the respondents who flossed at least once a week, 87.4% presented periodontitis. Likewise, a statistically significant association was found between flossing ≥5 days a week and periodontitis (PR=0.97 95% CI:0.94-0.99) (p=0.02), as well as for flossing 2 to 4 days a week (PR=0.94; 95% CI: 0.91-0.97) (p=0.00) in the crude analysis. In contrast, when covariate-adjusted analysis is performed, no association is found between the variables. Conclusions: There is an association between periodontitis and flossing in the adult American population between 2013 and 2014. However, when the covariate-adjusted analysis is performed, there is no association between the variables.
