Objective: Determine the factors associated with the interruption of enteral nutritional support and the impact on the cost of enteral nutrient remnants in patients in critical care areas of a tertiary hospital center in Lima, during the months of June-December 2022. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, descriptive-correlational, observational, cross-sectional-retrospective study. Non-probabilistic convenience sampling, 45 patients from critical care units. The following were identified: dates and reason for interruption of enteral nutritional support (IENS); the interruption time (hours) was determined; type and volume of nutrient delivered in records was identified; Remaining volume and cost were determined. To determine the associated factors, the Chi square test was applied with a p value <0.05 (alpha of 0.05). Results: 144 interruptions were recorded, a mean of 3.2 (SD±2.17) per patient, according to (1): liquid stools and gastric residue presented a significant association (p< 0.05) with episodes of IENS, as well as (3): interruptions due to SOP (p< 0.05) and (4): “Patient comfort” (p<0.05), in (2) there was no significant association. The total volume of remainder was 47,690 ml, with a total cost of S/ 3673.81 ($977.17), being: 49.4% for (1), 23.4% for (3), 23.2% for (4) and 3.9% for (2). Conclusions: Factors related to the patient (liquid stool, gastric residue), related to the interventional procedure (SOP), and related to nursing care (patient comfort) were associated with IENS. Where (1) had the greatest impact on the volume and total cost of the remainder, reaching 49.4% of the total accumulated cost.
