The present investigation took place in the context of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which the concerns inherent to this pandemic were added to the university academic stressors. The aim of the present article was to explore the mediating role of perceived stress in the relationship between socioeconomic status and executive function impairment in college students. The sample consisted of 55 participants, 48 females (87%) and 7 males (13%), between 18 and 37 years of age (M= 22.9, SD= 3.6). This sample was made up of university students from 2 non-profit associations governed by university law and 1 corporation in accordance with Legislative Decree 882. The instrument used to measure perceived stress was the Global Perceived Stress Scale (EEPG-13). For the measurement of per capita income, the division of the reported family income by the number of the family nucleus was used. Two behavioral tests were used to measure executive functioning: Stroop digit to measure inhibitory control (IC) and Nback to measure working memory (WM). These tests were developed in Psychopy software and then presented in the Pavlovia server. Finally, no significant associations were identified between the study variables, so dependence or mediation relationships were ruled out. Although the results contrast with previous literature, the study of proximal factors influencing executive functioning is still in its infancy in lower-middleincome countries. In addition, methodological limitations were identified with respect to the self-reporting of per capita income due to the percentage of economic informality and the application time involved in the behavioral tests. Suggestions for improvement for future research are put forward in the study.
