The present research is developed around the relation of the previous knowledge and the academic performance in students of the second academic semester (84.44% of those enrolled) of the faculty of chemical and textile engineering of the national university of engineering. It seeks to determine the relationship that exists between the first variable and academic performance in the subjects of Chemistry I and Chemistry Laboratory I that are the prerequisites of the subject of Chemistry II. It is an investigation that is framed in the positivist paradigm, from a quantitative approach. The level of research is descriptive of the correlational type. Their measurement instruments were questionnaire of multiple alternatives and the score of the mentioned courses. In this work, there is a weak correlation, of 0.317 but significant at the 0.01 level, between previous knowledge and academic performance in Chemistry I; while, in Chemistry Laboratory I, it is 0.158, being considered null. Therefore, it was recommended that the syllabus be modified in order to achieve this objective.
