The present qualitative research analyzes the impact of autonomous contemporary art managements, an alternative work system to the hegemonic art scene (Mellado, 2015), in the exercise of citizen participation, under the perspective of: substantive citizenship (Wittger, 2017) and autonomous participation (Ziccardi, 1998). The study of this particular phenomenon of organization of work in art focuses on the local scene of Lima during the period 2016 to 2022, marked by the economic contraction derived from the political crisis (Sharkey, 2018) and the contingency measures in the face of the health crisis due to COVID-19. That said, we seek to respond to three objectives 1) To analyze the factors that influenced the increase in the number of autonomous contemporary art managements in the local Lima scene from 2016 to 2022; 2) To identify what type of initiatives developed by autonomous contemporary art managements have been more relevant to the development of citizen participation and which have not contributed to this process; 3) To know the meanings that art workers of autonomous contemporary art managements have about citizen participation.
