The term "communicative competence" has a polysemic definition. With the proposal of several authors, new components have been added to this term. Therefore, this bibliometric article seeks to understand the structuring of the trends and theoretical foundations that serve as a basis for the configuration of the term "communicative competence". The objective of this research is to examine and describe the theoretical trends and their respective authors on the mentioned term, to recognize the textual genres in which these literary sources were written, and finally, to identify the geographical context of dissemination of the literary universe. The information was analyzed qualitatively and the bibliographic sources were systematized. The following trends were obtained. First, there is a hint of a historical path that begins with Chomsky (1965, 1957) and continues with the authors Hymes (1966, 1971), Canale and Swain (1980), Celce-Murcia (1995), Correa (2001) and Ellis (1997), cited in the corpus and related to the theoretical concept of communicative competence, linguistic competence ,and pragmatic competence. Second, it is recognized that the textual genre of "books" are from those authors who gave a conceptual basis to communicative competence. Finally, the European geographical context has a greater field of research on the configuration of the term.
